Car seats are essential to your children’s safety. However, if they aren’t installed correctly, it can seriously diminish the protection they provide. At Carroll Buick GMC, we’re highlighting how to use the LATCH System so that you can be confident in yours.

What is the LATCH System?

The LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) System is an attachment system. It was designed to make it easier to install car seats and ensure they’re installed correctly. There are top and lower anchors to help keep your car seat securely fastened in your vehicle too.

How Does the LATCH System Work?

Car seats include lower anchor connectors, which must be attached to your vehicle’s lower anchors. These are typically found where the top and lower cushions meet in your rear seat.

Forward-facing car seats also include a top tether, which should be attached to the top anchor in your vehicle. It can be found on the panel behind the rear seat, on the back of the seat, ceiling, or floor. The top tether is designed to keep forward-facing car seats from tipping forward.

What About My Seatbelt?

Car seats can be attached using the LATCH System lower anchors or seat belts; they are equally safe. You don’t need to use both. However, a forward-facing car seat should always use the top tether, whether you use the LATCH System or a seat belt.
